From imported products to one of the largest industries in the world with the highest level of RESEARCH and development, the past 20 years shine with the diligence and wisdom of the Chinese people.
From the introduction of the first batch of asparagus germplasm resources, to the cultivation of China’s first asparagus varieties with independent intellectual property rights, to the initiation and leading international cooperation of asparagus genome Project, these 20 years have recorded the climbing and searching of Jiangxi people.
China has become the world asparagus industry production, processing, trade, research and development center. Dr. Chen Guangyu, chief expert of national non-profit Industry (agriculture) scientific Research and inspector of Jiangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences, proudly said that in the next 30 years, the world asparagus industry will be led by China.
Innovation: to establish a leading position in the world asparagus industry
What kind of asparagus is more salt-tolerant? What kind of asparagus is most resistant to drought?
The results of asparagus genome sequencing will be the focus of the 13th World Asparagus Congress to be held in Nanchang on October 16. This international collaboration, initiated and led by Chinese scientists, means that new asparagus varieties can be selectively bred according to production needs through molecular breeding methods, ushering in a post-genomic era for the asparagus industry.
The international cooperation of asparagus Genome Project is coordinated by domestic and foreign experts including Jiangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences and university of Georgia in the United States. This is the second major international cooperation project of the Genome Project led by Chinese scientists, following the Cucumber Genome Project.
The asparagus innovation team of Jiangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences led by Dr. Chen Guangyu is the core research and development team of Chinese asparagus industry. It was this team that introduced the asparagus germplasm resources originating from the Mediterranean coast to China for the first time, established China’s first asparagus germplasm resource nursery, and cultivated several new varieties with completely independent intellectual property rights.
Asparagus is dioecious and, as a rule, it takes at least 20 years to establish a complete breeding system. By using tissue culture technology and molecular marker assisted technology, the innovative team in Jiangxi completed the successful leap from variety introduction to independent breeding in only 10 years. “Jinggang 701″ is the first new variety approved by the state clonal hybrid F1 generation, “Jinggang Hong” is the first purple tetraploid new variety, “Jinggang 111″ is the first all-male new variety selected by molecular marker-assisted breeding technology. Thus, China ended the passive situation of asparagus seeds completely relying on imports and being controlled by others.
Stem blight, known as asparagus cancer, can reduce yields by up to 30 percent to nothing when it occurs. The asparagus innovation team of The Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences, from the aspects of resistant variety breeding and supporting cultivation technology, has eliminated stem blight at one stroke. Using standardized facility cultivation techniques provided by the team, asparagus yields an average of more than 20 tons per hectare, several times the level of 4 tons per hectare in similar facilities abroad.
Relying on the outstanding achievements of independent innovation, THE Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences presided over the development of the first batch of 3 national asparagus industry standards, and established a world-class organic asparagus production demonstration base. We have created the most advanced organic asparagus planting mode in China, and obtained the EU organic certification, and obtained the “green pass” to the international market.
